Steps from University of Michigan Hospital and central campus, the Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden is easy to visit and open from sunrise to sunset.
- The James D. Reader Urban Environmental Education Center is next to the Peony Garden at the Washington Hts/ entrance to the Arb. A range of visitor amenities are available from mid-March through mid-November. Click here for seasonal hours of operation.
- Many food options are available nearby in several of the University Hospitals, on central campus, and downtown Ann Arbor.
- Picnics are welcome (no cooking or campfires allowed inside the Arboretum).
: summer 2016 construction on Observatory affects Arboretum parking and traffic. In a 2-part project beginning in early May through the end of August, Washington Hts. becomes a 2-way street and the Arb parking spaces on Washington Hts. move to theU-M blue lot across the street (Lot M95; see map)
. Observatory street at E. Medical Center Dr. closes in the first phase (see map)
and then Observatory closes at Washington Hts. during the second phase (see map)
. Visitors traveling by car to Nichols Arboretum are encouraged to park in the U-M hospital P2 structure
before 5 pm. The blue lot above Ronald McDonald House on Washington Hts. is open after 5 weekdays and on Saturdays and Sundays. Remember to build in extra time to get to the Arb if you're attending an event such as Shakespeare in the Arb.
The Peony Garden is near the Washington Heights entrance to 'The Arb'. It's convenient for pedestrians, persons taking the AATA or University of Michigan buses, and near major roads. Parking options vary by day and time. More information by transportation type is at the link below
When to Visit
Peonies are seasonal - so consider this information if your schedule allows it. Otherwise, the Arb is open sunrise to sunset every day.
